World Bird Festival
Celebrating the inspiration of Birds!
Birds are spectacular.
While we are earthbound, birds fly. Birds are part of our daily lives, our art, dances, songs, myths. Birds provide us with food, ornaments, and ceremonial objects.
BirdLife Partners around the world, organise events, which bring people closer to birds and nature. Nature Kenya is a member of the global Partnership of conservation organisations called BirdLife International.
The idea of uniting birdwatching events around the world into a single event gave rise to BirdLife’s first ever WORLD BIRDWATCH in 1993.
In Kenya WORLD BIRDWATCH weekend has involved a large number of birders in teams, who fan out across the country, to clock off the largest number of species in 48 hours. It is exhaustive, competitive and fun. It is also very useful in the collection of data on bird species occurrence and distribution.
Since then WORLD BIRDWATCH was held during one weekend in October every two years. Additionally BirdLife Partners in Europe have run EUROPEAN BIRDWATCH annually. In the Americas the BirdLife network have carried out bird and nature events annually during the entire month of October and it was called “Festival Mundial de las Aves” (World Bird Festival).
World Bird Festivals are now celebrated around the world, of which the WORLD BIRDWATCH, is one component.
BirdLife International Partner organisations work closely together to conserve all bird species and their habitats, and through this, to work for the world’s biological diversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.
